SINGAPORE – Twenty-four pedestrians, aged between 20 and 70, were issued summons for ignoring the red light at pedestrian crossings.
Enforcement actions took place islandwide between March 17 and 21.
In response to queries by The Straits Times on March 28, the Traffic Police (TP) said that the number of accidents involving pedestrians who jaywalked increased by 23 per cent, from 288 cases in 2023 to 353 cases in 2024.
Images of several pedestrians being stopped by TP were shared in a Facebook post on the Use Your RoadSense page on March 24.
TP said that enforcement action will be taken against those who endanger themselves and others when crossing while the light is red.
“These measures also protect drivers, who may be forced into sudden stops or evasive actions due to unsafe pedestrian behaviour,” the post reads.
Those found guilty of failing to conform to the red light signal at a pedestrian crossing will be fined $50.
Traffic deaths and injuries reached a five-year-high in 2024, with speeding making up a third of all fatal crashes, according to figures released by TP in February.
In total, 142 people died in traffic-related accidents in 2024, up from 136 in 2023.
The number of people injured in such accidents also rose to 9,302 in 2024 from 8,941 in 2023.
