5 states registered higher GDP per capita than the national average in 2023


KUALA LUMPUR: Five states registered higher gross domestic product (GDP) per capita than the national average in 2023, with Kuala Lumpur registering per capita GDP of RM131,038.

Malaysia posted a GDP per capita of RM54,612 in 2023, according to the Department of Statistics of Malaysia (DOSM).

GDP per capita breaks down GDP to amount per person and is generally regarded as an average living standard and economic well being.

Labuan had the second highest GDP per capita at RM83,596, Penang with RM72,586, Sarawak with RM72,411 and Selangor with RM62,492.

In comparison, Selangor contributed the highest amount to GDP with RM406.1 billion, Kuala Lumpur with RM249.3 billion, Johor with RM148.2 billion, Sarawak with RM142.4 billion and Pulau Pinang with RM116 billion.

DOSM said most states witnessed an increase in GDP per capita performance in 2023 , except for Pahang, Terengganu, Sabah, Sarawak, and W.P. Labuan.

Sabah and Sarawak’s GDP per capita fell 13 per cent to RM31,147 and 10 per cent to RM72,411 respectively.

While, Terengganu’s was down 3.4 per cent to RM31,111, Pahang’s was down 2.5 per cent to RM46,084, and Labuan was 2 per cent lower at RM83,596.
