Paris Paralympics: Singapore’s Yip Pin Xiu tops 50m backstroke S2 heats, advances to final


SINGAPORE: Yip Pin Xiu has qualified for the 50m backstroke S2 final at the Paris Paralympics after being the fastest qualifier in the heats on Saturday (Aug 31).

The defending champion clocked a time of 1:05.06 and finished in first place overall. Mexico’s silver medalist Haidee Aceves finished second and Italy’s Angela Procida had the third fastest time.

A victory will take the Singaporean’s Paralympic medal haul to seven overall, and two at this meet.

The top eight swimmers from the two heats advanced to the final which will take place at 1.54am on Sunday morning (Singapore time).

Yip, 32, took gold in the event at the 2016 and 2020 Paralympics. She is also the current world record holder in the event.
