The next time you call for an Uber while in Hong Kong, don’t be surprised if former TVB actor Sammy Sun is your designated driver.
A netizen revealed on Threads that he had booked an Uber ride, and his driver turned out to be the 41-year-old actor, who was driving a BMW iX. He even revealed that Sammy had an impressive rating of 4.96 on the app.
After the post went viral, Sammy responded with a two-minute Instagram post about becoming an Uber driver.
“I didn’t know it would cause so much news,” laughed Sammy before sharing the pressures he’s currently facing.
He explained that he had invested a seven-figure sum to open a gym but, although the business is breaking even, he hasn’t yet recouped the investment, citing the poor economy as the reason.
The boutique gym, 111 Ones Fitness, is located in Causeway Bay, and the See Her Again actor opened it in 2023, together with his girlfriend, Hong Kong actress, Shirley Chan.
“I don’t have a salary, but my employees must be paid on time,” said Sammy emphasising his commitment to the business despite financial challenges.
“Since I like driving so much, I thought I might as well register on the platform and have someone pre-set a route for me,” he added.
He also encouraged his followers to stay healthy and thanked those who reached out to offer support.
Many netizens praised Sammy for choosing to make an honest living.
“Many people juggle multiple jobs. There is nothing shameful in doing what it takes to make ends meet,” read a comment.
Another cheekily asked, “Is there a way I can ensure that you will be my driver when I book a ride? Asking for a friend.”
Sammy auditioned for TVB in 2006 and gained recognition in the 2014 crime-thriller drama, Line Walker.
Despite Sammy’s rising popularity then, he left TVB in 2016, opting to look to Mainland China for acting opportunities, and is now currently signed with Hong Kong-based Emperor Entertainment.
