Consider this a reminder to check the shared condiments at eateries — preferably before you douse your food in the sauces, or worse still, start eating.
An unsuspecting diner in Malaysia who was having half-boiled eggs at a coffee shop found themselves with a few extra ‘ingredients’ in their meal.
In a video that the diner shared on socials, they had already finished their meal when they noticed worms wriggling in the shared dark soy sauce bottle at the coffee shop.
Eww! How did they still manage to keep their food down after seeing this?
According to medical experts, these worms, aka soy sauce flies, are found when the bottle isn’t tightly sealed after it’s been opened.
They also say that higher quality soy sauce which contain more amino acids have a higher chance of attracting these bugs.
Perhaps the coffee shop didn’t stinge on quality soy sauce?
However, experts also say this can also happen when manufacturers have poor sterilisation measures.
Netizens were grossed out by the video with numerous commenters saying that they now have a phobia of adding soy sauce to their food.
“I hope you did not get food poisoning or need to see a doctor,” one quipped. Another asked: “How long has it been since they changed out the sauce?”
Someone even speculated that it could be the restaurant’s way of saving costs by using old sauce in an effort to discourage diners from requesting for more.
However, some tried to make light of the situation: “More protein is a good thing, you will be fine.”
Um, we’d rather get our protein sources in other ways, thank you very much.
