SINGAPORE – Two men who sexually assaulted an intoxicated 16-year-old girl in a toilet at Admiralty Park in 2022 were sentenced on April 7 after they each pleaded guilty to a charge of rape.
Muhammad Isnalli David, 22, the main perpetrator, was handed 12½ years’ jail and 12 strokes of the cane.
He had dragged the victim into the women’s toilet, took her into a cubicle and assaulted her.
Three other charges, one for rape, one for sexual assault involving penetration and one for criminal trespass, were considered in sentencing.
Muhammad Al’Amin Selamat, 23, who joined in after seeing Isnalli assault the victim, was given 10½ years’ jail and 12 strokes of the cane.
Two other charges, one for sexual assault involving penetration and one for criminal trespass, were considered in sentencing.
A third man, Raden Zulhusni Zulkifri, 27, has also been accused of joining in the sexual assault but is claiming trial.
Raden faces one charge of sexual assault by penetration and one charge of criminal trespass.
In sentencing arguments on the harm caused to the victim, the prosecution told the High Court that her grandmother and brother blamed her for the incident, and her relationship with them had deteriorated.
On the afternoon of March 27, 2022, the victim and her friend, a 21-year-old woman, met up with Isnalli.
This was the first time that the victim met Isnalli, who was then 19 years old.
At the time, he was on electronic tagging after being released from a reformative training centre for rioting, impersonating a public servant and theft.
After the trio watched a movie, Isnalli bought a bottle of gin and six cans of energy drink.
They then took a private-hire car to Admiralty Park, where they met Raden, Al’Amin and another 21-year-old woman.
The group sat at a bench and drank the alcohol Isnalli had bought. They were later joined by a seventh person, a 20-year-old woman.
The victim became intoxicated after drinking cups of gin mixed with energy drink.
When she felt the urge to vomit, Isnalli supported her to a women’s toilet at the park.
He dragged her into the toilet by her arm, entered a cubicle with her and locked the door.
After partially undressing himself and the victim, he raped her.
Meanwhile, Raden and Al’Amin went to the toilet after noticing that Isnalli and the victim had been gone for some time.
A 52-second video was taken of Isnalli assaulting the victim.
Isnalli raped the victim a second time.
A while later, Al’Amin entered the cubicle and raped the victim.
Isnalli said he observed Raden sexually penetrate the victim while Al-Amin was forcing the victim to perform oral sex on him.
Raden and Al’Amin eventually left the toilet one after the other. Isnalli raped the victim again.
He stopped after a while, put on his clothes and helped the victim put on her clothes. He then supported her out of the toilet.
Deputy Public Prosecutor Melissa Heng said that during the sexual assault, the victim muttered “don’t” and “no” a few times, and both Isnalli and Al’Amin knew that she was intoxicated at the time.
The group left the park shortly after. While waiting at the bus stop, Isnalli apologised to the victim and asked for forgiveness. She did not reply to him.
The next day, March 28, 2022, the victim told one of her friends and her 28-year-old brother that she had been raped.
The victim’s friend then informed her own brother-in-law. The 30-year-old man and his wife met the victim, who told them that she was raped.
The man and the victim’s brother then met Isnalli at the park that afternoon, and beat him up.
Meanwhile, Raden told his father that he was accused of raping a girl. Raden’s father advised him and Al’Amin to lodge a police report and show the video to the police.
Raden and Al’Amin filed a police report that evening.
