PUTRAJAYA: The government has heightened its preparedness for the northeast monsoon, following continuous rain warnings expected to last until Monday.
Government spokesman Datuk Fahmi Fadzil said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof had briefed the cabinet on the National Disaster Management Agency’s readiness for the monsoon season.
“The public is advised to stay alert and make necessary preparations for the Northeast Monsoon, especially over the next few days until Monday,” he told reporters after the International Anti-Corruption Day (Hara) celebration, attended by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
Fahmi, who is communications minister, said the cabinet during the meeting today, was informed that the number of flood evacuees at temporary relief centres had dropped to 3,147, with four more centres closed, leaving 49 still operating.
Meanwhile, on the situation in Indonesia, he said the prime minister would be contacting President Prabowo Subianto later today to convey Malaysia’s sympathy and offer assistance.
“This is to determine what aid the government can extend to our neighbour, which is the priority.
“The prime minister will also convey condolences to the victims of the floods and landslides in Sumatra during the call,” he said.
