Sheng Siong Praised By Netizens For How It Treats Employees

Earlier this week, a Redditor made a post titled “Sheng Siong really takes care of their employees”, sharing a photo of a long table lined with takeaway boxes of food.

The OP, moved by the sight, wrote: “Went to buy groceries and noticed them [having] a lunch break with a big spread, for what I assume would be a Christmas lunch! Really quite heartwarming to see. Wish most local companies would do the same.”

The short post quickly gained traction online, and it turns out many Singaporeans share similarly positive sentiments toward the local supermarket chain.

Netizens wasted no time praising Sheng Siong for how they treat their staff, with one commenting: “It is very rare for listed companies to not be taken over by those toxic capitalistic mindset of exploitation of the lower rank and file. Kudos to those in charge running Sheng Siong.”

Another added simply: “Sheng Siong has compassionate leadership.”

One commenter went further: “Sheng Siong is honestly a prime example of — if you take care of your employees, they’ll take care of your company back. From bonuses to employee welfare to Ang Bao and generous employee policies — this is honestly a damn rare case where the top listens to the bottom.”

They argued that many other companies are driven by “ego” and often neglect frontline workers.

“But not Sheng Siong. It seems like everyone is well taken care of, despite the gruelling labour. We need more of this,” they said.

Many agreed they’ve had consistently good experiences shopping at Sheng Siong — often attributing it to employees being treated well and having high work satisfaction.

Those who previously worked there also stepped in to “confirm” that Sheng Siong looks after its staff.

“They really do take care of their employees and it starts from the highest level,” wrote one netizen who used to work part-time at the Elias Mall outlet. They recalled the chairman, Lim Hock Eng, personally visiting the store to hand out red packets on Chinese New Year’s Eve — something that had “forever left an impression” on them.

Another shared that while the work could be tough, especially during festive periods, supervisors were “very friendly and casual”, and lunch was provided on most days, making their time there memorable.

Netizens believe more supermarket chains should adopt Sheng Siong’s compassionate approach, and as one Redditor put it: “Sometimes people forget that taking care of employees is free advertisement itself.”

Now, that’s the kind of viral story businesses should aspire to.
