Negri retain Agong's Cup basketball titles in Chong Wei's presence

KUALA LUMPUR: Negri Sembilan retained the Agong’s Cup men’s title for the eighth consecutive time after defeating Johor 79-64 in the final at Karisma Arena, Seremban, on Saturday.

The victory was bolstered by the Negri Sembilan women’s team, who won their fifth title with a 72-62 win over Johor.

During the final, the Negri men’s team faced stiff resistance from Johor, who narrowed the gap to 68-62 in the final quarter before the champions pulled away.

Negri captain Wong Yi How said he and his teammates had to work incredibly hard throughout the final.

“We felt that the fight to win this time was much tougher because Johor were very competitive, but we are happy that our mission to defend the title was achieved,” said Yi How.

“The hard work we put into our preparations immediately after completing our duties at the Bangkok SEA Games last month clearly paid off. We are proud to maintain Negri as a powerhouse in Malaysian basketball.”

Meanwhile, Malaysian Basketball Association president (Maba) Datuk Seri Lee Tian Hock said he was satisfied with the quality of play.

“It shows the standard of basketball in Malaysia is improving,” said Tian Hock.

“However, I hope the championship will not be monopolised only by Negri or Johor. I want to see other states strive for excellence and reach the final stage as well.”

Badminton legend Chong Wei presented the prizes to the winners.
