SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Immigration Department recorded over 49,000 participants for the Migrant Repatriation Programme 2.0 since its launch in May last year.
Selangor Immigration director Khairrul Aminus Kamaruddin said the figures indicate a significant rise in the number of foreigners who have been residing in Malaysia without valid documentation or who have overstayed for long periods.
“The programme offers a more structured approach to addressing the issue of undocumented migrants in the country without involving prolonged detention,” Khairrul Aminus said to reporters here after an operation at the Triana Pitstop bazaar here.
Participation in the programme provides foreigners with valid travel documents, which allows them to leave the country without arrest.
“Instead, they will only need to undergo the stipulated process before being allowed to return to their respective home countries,” he said.
It was previous reported that 177,000 migrants around the country registered under the programme, generating over RM88 million in compound fines as of February this year.
