Sources confirmed that about 79 per cent of the 107 cadres present voted in favour of Singh, 49. He later ran unopposed and was re-elected as secretary general at the party’s biennial ordinary cadres’ meeting on Sunday afternoon to elect the WP’s leadership.
Singh told reporters after the conferences that procedures under the party’s constitution were followed, adding that the WP accepted the democratic process and the election result.
“The party understands that its purpose is to behave in a rational and responsible way and represent Singaporeans faithfully, and if we want to continue to do that, I think we have to close ranks as any reasonable and respectable political party ought to do,” Singh said.
According to the sources, about 10 MPs, election candidates and senior cadres spoke during the first conference, with most of them voicing support for Singh.
