SINGAPORE, Aug 12 — A doctor and his acquaintance were each sentenced to a year in jail today for consuming MDMA, also known as Ecstasy, after being arrested at a party in Sentosa in 2023.
The Straits Times reported that doctor Rayson Lee Rui Sheng, 36, and Tan Li Ming, 29, were among 49 men arrested during a police raid at a villa at the Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort & Spa on Aug 9, 2023.
The pair were convicted in June of one count each of drug consumption following a trial.
The court heard that Lee had attended a birthday party at the villa before leaving for a club in Clarke Quay, where he met Tan.
They later returned to the villa separately in the early hours of Aug 9.
Police found substances suspected to be controlled drugs, including Ecstasy and ketamine, as well as drug paraphernalia.
According to the report, tests by the Health Sciences Authority found MDMA in their urine, while their hair samples showed consumption of both Ecstasy and ketamine.
The pair claimed their drinks had been spiked, but prosecutors said there was no credible evidence to support the claim.
District Judge A. Sangeetha found their accounts not credible, noting that their hair samples showed prior drug use. “Neither man was a stranger to drug use,” she said.
The court heard today that Lee and Tan will appeal against their convictions.
