MetMalaysia sounds thunderstorm warning for KL, Selangor and eight states until 6pm


KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 9 — The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) has issued a thunderstorm warning for parts of Peninsular Malaysia, Sarawak and Sabah, with thunderstorms, heavy rain and strong winds expected until 6pm today.

In an alert issued at 3pm, the department said the affected areas in Kedah are Sik, Baling, Kulim and Bandar Baharu. In Perak, they are Kerian, Selama, Larut Matang, Manjung, Perak Tengah, Bagan Datuk and Hilir Perak.

In Terengganu, the warning covers Setiu, Hulu Terengganu, Kuala Nerus, Kuala Terengganu, Marang, Dungun and Kemaman. In Pahang, it covers Raub, Temerloh, Jerantut, Kuantan, Lipis and Cameron Highlands.

In Selangor, the affected districts are Kuala Selangor, Klang, Kuala Langat, Sabak Bernam, Sepang and Petaling. The Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya are also included.

In Sarawak, the warning covers Bintulu, Subis in Miri, Selangau and Kanowit in Sibu, Dalat and Mukah in Mukah, Kapit and Song in Kapit, and Lubok Antu in Sri Aman.

In Sabah, the affected areas are Pensiangan, Membakut and Beaufort in the Interior Division, Sandakan, Ranau and Papar on the West Coast, and Kalabakan in Tawau.

MetMalaysia said such warnings are issued when there are signs of thunderstorms with rainfall intensity exceeding 20mm per hour that are imminent, or expected to last more than an hour.

Thunderstorm warnings are short-term alerts and are valid for no more than six hours per issuance.
