Azeem opens 2026 season in style with 60m gold

KUALA LUMPUR: Sprinter Azeem Fahmi kicked off his new season in impressive fashion by winning the men’s 60-metre event at the UAB Blazer Invitational indoor meet in Birmingham on Friday.

The national record holder powered through the final to clock 6.60s, beating Omari Lewis of Trinidad and Tobago (6.66s), with American Nikoby Johnson settling for third in 6.74s.

It was an encouraging opener for Azeem, who is expected to lead Malaysia’s challenge in the blue-riband sprint at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan from Sept 19-Oct 4, after opting out of the Thailand SEA Games last month.

The win further underlined Azeem’s growing stature in the 60m after a standout campaign last year, when he smashed the national record with 6.56s in Texas in March.

“My performances will only get better from here,” he posted on X.
