Last Friday (Feb 28), details of the SG60 Baby Gift were announced by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Indranee Rajah in Parliament.
Parents of Singaporean babies born in 2025 can register for the SG60 Baby Gift, which includes 10 items from local brands.
The items are: A SG60 family photo book, wooden building blocks, a straw cup with adaptor cap, a food bib, a baby toy play set, a SG60 limited edition Becky Bunny plushie, a set of two Becky Bunny story books, a SG60 parenting journal, a backpack, and a trolley bag. You can view the full list of items in this CNA article.
The gift package will also include a congratulatory letter from PM Lawrence Wong, and parents are encouraged to use the items to bond with their kids.
Unsurprisingly, Singaporeans have a lot to say about the SG60 Baby Gift, at least on Reddit.
Many agree that parents would rather receive “more childcare leave” and “vouchers for diapers or milk powder” over things like a parenting journal or a plushie.
A comment read: “The biggest winners here are the companies that produce these items.”
One netizen remarked that “souvenirs just collect dust at home”, and what parents really need is flexibility with their work schedules or help with future childcare and schooling arrangements.
Others also felt that while the items are good for “photos, social media, and free publicity”, they are “not practical”.
There were also those who were tickled by the Baby Gift, with some likening it to NDP goody bags and McDonald’s Happy Meal gifts.
While a number agreed that some items from the gift, like the straw cup and toy play set, are indeed useful, a common consensus was that parents would appreciate necessities like diapers and milk powder more.
