Izzuddin-Sze Fei pleased with Sudirman Cup squad strength, returning to ABM 'feels like coming home'

KUALA LUMPUR: Men’s badminton doubles pair Nur Izzuddin Rumsani-Goh Sze Fei are relishing competition for spots in the starting lineup for the upcoming Sudirman Cup which starts in Xiamen, China next week.

The duo are one of three top-10 pairs in the squad alongside Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik and Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun.

Izzuddin-Sze Fei returned to Academy Badminton Malaysia (ABM) in Bukit Kiara today (April 22) to compete in a simulation match against Aaron-Wooi Yik.

The national body, however, kept the results of all simulation matches private.

Izzuddin is confident the strength-in-depth in the doubles department will give Malaysia an advantage at the Sudirman Cup.

“I feel that it is good to have three good pairs in the squad,” said Izzuddin.

“This will allow us to have a good chance of winning, regardless of which pair plays. It is also a form of healthy competition for all pairs.

“Whoever plays will definitely give their best. What is important is that we have to be prepared mentally, physically and tactically for each match.”

Izzuddin-Sze Fei turned professional late last year and have enjoyed tremendous success on tour since then.

They, however, welcomed the opportunity to revisit ABM for the simulation match.

“It feels like coming home, BAM has the best facilities and we are thankful to be able to learn from coach Herry IP,” said Sze Fei.

The simulation matches are intended to prepare the squad for the Sudirman Cup which, as a team event, has a different atmosphere compared to normal individual competitions.
