GEORGE TOWN: The Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery at The Light Waterfront in Gelugor, which will officially open next month, is set to further strengthen Penang’s position as a creative hub and world-class heritage destination.
Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said the gallery was not merely an addition to the state’s cultural infrastructure, but a reflection of the aspirations of Penang2030, which emphasises balanced human development, a creativity-driven economy and community well-being through knowledge and the arts.
He said the gallery demonstrated Penang’s capability to serve as an international cultural bridge, connecting local heritage with the wider world and creating opportunities for knowledge exchange and global collaboration.
“Art is not only about beauty, but also about connection and understanding. Through art, we build bridges between generations, cultures and nations.
“Although Penang is small geographically, the influence, talent and ideas of its people extend across the world.
“Spaces like this serve as important platforms for artists, students, visitors and the community to share ideas, knowledge and experiences. This aligns with the principles of Malaysia Madani, which emphasise inclusivity, compassion and human well-being through creativity and education,” he said at the launch of the Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery.
The ceremony was officiated by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Tun Ramli Ngah Talib.
Also present was the gallery’s founder, Professor Lin Xiang Xiong.
Guests were taken on a tour of the collection The Vicissitudes of Life, featuring 99 of Lin’s artworks highlighting urgent global issues such as war, pollution and poverty.
The collection encourages reflection on humanity’s shared struggles and hopes, underscoring Lin’s lifelong dedication to promoting peace through art.
Meanwhile, Lin, 80, said the gallery — spanning 8,076 square metres across eight storeys — signified Malaysia’s growing presence on the global cultural map.
It is envisioned as a permanent platform for cultural exchange and global dialogue, bridging East and West through artistic collaboration.
He said the gallery’s location along Penang’s coastline represented a convergence of diplomacy, heritage and the transformative power of creativity, reflecting Malaysia’s broader aspiration to promote peace and cultural confidence through the arts.
“The project is not only an artistic pursuit, but also a reflection of Malaysia’s values in an increasingly divided world.
“At a time when differences dominate global narratives, Malaysia has chosen to respond with creativity and compassion. This gallery is not only a tribute to art, but a commitment to dialogue, and a reminder that peace is built through understanding,” he said.
The Lin Xiang Xiong Art Gallery, which will open on Dec 14, will serve not only as a new cultural landmark for Penang, but also as a symbol of Malaysia’s efforts to promote peace, mutual understanding and artistic exchange globally.
Valued at an estimated RM100 million, the gallery stands as a testament to cultural confidence and meaningful global artistic engagement.
It was built to reflect the life philosophy of its founder, who believes in the concept of “art for peace”.
Its architectural design is distinctive, resembling a turtle emerging from the shoreline. The building features modern glass panels and spacious interiors filled with natural light overlooking the sea, giving it a contemporary and futuristic feel.
