The sister of an 18-year-old driver involved in a fatal accident that killed three teenaged motorcyclists has offered a tearful apology to the families of the victims, as Malaysians rage over the apparent instincts of the wealthy to play up their plight while dismissing the suffering of others.
Police said the unnamed driver did not have a valid licence and was being investigated for reckless or dangerous driving over the crash last Thursday night. He faces up to 15 years’ jail if found guilty. He is in hospital along with other victims of the crash.
Two secondary school students aged 15 and 16 were killed on the spot after their motorcycle collided with a car in Senawang district in southern Negeri Sembilan state. A third victim, a 17-year-old motorcyclist, died on Monday in hospital.
Videos of the crash went viral after they showed a car hurtling down a highway and beating a red light just before the collision with two motorcycles.
In a post on Friday, the driver’s sister Nur Athira Najwa said her brother was behind the wheel but asked the public not to blame him and instead pray for his recovery.
That triggered outrage over her lack of acknowledgement of the deaths the crash caused and apparent lack of empathy for their families.
