Man charged after he allegedly stole money boxes containing around $50k at wedding reception

SINGAPORE – A man was at the foyer of the grand ballroom at JW Marriott Hotel Singapore South Beach when he allegedly stole two boxes containing around $50,000 in cash at a wedding reception.

Lee Yi Wei, 36, was handed a theft charge on April 9.

The Singaporean is accused of committing the offence at the Beach Road hotel shortly before 12.50pm on April 5. Court documents do not state if he was a guest at the reception.

In an earlier statement, the police said: “Preliminary investigations revealed that the man had possibly premeditated the theft of the wedding money boxes and (he) also changed into a different attire after the alleged incident.”

Officers from the Central Police Division arrested Lee on April 7 and recovered $3,000 in cash from him.

Lee’s case will be mentioned again on April 16.

If convicted of theft, he can be jailed for up to three years and fined.
