Mooncake deterioration due to mishandling during transit and storage, says bakery



PETALING JAYA: Mishandling during transit and storage at a third-party warehouse likely caused the deterioration of the Snow Skin Signature Yam product, the Baker’s Cottage Group said.

In a statement on Sunday (15 Sept), the company said this was the reason the product recently failed regulatory checks by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) where elevated Escherichia coli (E. coli) levels were detected.

The company acknowledged that while the product complied with SFA standards before export, the issues arose after the product left its control.

“Recent regulatory checks have detected E coli levels exceeding the standards set by the SFA.

“While we ensured compliance with SFA standards before exporting to Singapore, it appears that mishandling during transit and storage at a third-party warehouse may have led to product deterioration.

“We sincerely regret this situation and are taking immediate steps to rectify it,” the statement read.

The company assured that it is committed to ensuring the quality and safety of its products, adding that it is implementing enhanced measures to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

On Saturday, it was reported that the SFA had ordered the recall of Baker’s Cottage Snow Skin Signature Yam Mooncake, imported from Malaysia, after detecting high levels of E. coli in the product.

The agency stated that the mooncakes, imported by Ewayz Pte Ltd, were found to have E. coli levels exceeding the maximum allowable limit under Singapore’s Food Regulations.

As a precautionary measure, the recall is being carried out for the product with a Dec 31, 2024 expiry date.

The SFA advised consumers who have purchased the mooncakes not to consume them.
