KUCHING: Norafizah Busman’s four children decided to dive after her, and this resulted in a family of Sukma medallists.
Awang Mohammad Sharszan Fyirman (21), Awang Sharzan Nasrin (19), Dayang Nursharzyra (17), Awang Sharzan Zaqwan (10) took up diving. However, Fyirman had to switch to lawn bowls due to chlorine allergy.
Fyirman (lawn bowls), Nasrin and Nursharzyra (diving) all won medals for Sarawak at the recent Malaysia Games (Sukma).
Norafizah, who was involved in hockey and athletics at state level, said: “My husband and I told them that if they choose sport, there’s is no turning back. They must give their all, not only in their chosen sport but in their studies too.
“Because they need to learn how to manage their time between training and studies. That’s very difficult and needs great commitment.
“But if you do it properly, there’s nothing that is impossible,” she said when met after Nasrin and Nursharzyra won the Sukma mixed synchronised 3m springboard gold last Tuesday.
Nurafizah revealed that at the 2022 Sukma in Kuala Lumpur, she had to console Nursharzyra after the women’s diving events were cancelled due to lack of participants.
“I was in Kuala Lumpur with my child and I was crying with her when her events were cancelled.
“So, I’m very proud that she proved what she can do it here in her home state,” added Norafizah.
Fyirman won a lawn bowl silver with partner Nur Syurhaidah Asara in the mixed pair event while Nursharzyra was the standout performer, winning three golds – one with her brother, Nasrin, and one silver medal.
“I don’t mind whatever results they get. I told them that if they give their 100 per cent, I will always be proud of them.
“After you give your 100 per cent, if it is not meant for you then it will not belong to you. But if it is written that it is for you, then it will be yours,” said Norafizah.
