SINGAPORE – President Tharman Shanmugaratnam has congratulated Donald Trump on his victory over Vice-President Kamala Harris in the Nov 5 US election.
In a Facebook post on Nov 6, Mr Tharman said Trump would “lead a nation in need of healing, and a people who must rediscover common purpose, despite their divisions”.
Noting that “no one can expect this to be achieved easily or quickly”, Mr Tharman described the task as immense, for both the government and every level of the country’s society.
“But President Trump pledged in his victory speech to work every day and with every breath for every citizen, their families, and their future,” he said, adding that the United States also plays a critical role in a world that “aspires for peace for all peoples, and for nations large and small being able to prosper together”.
“Singapore has had a deep and enduring relationship with the US,” said Mr Tharman.
“We look forward to working actively with President Trump and his team to achieve our mutual interests in an interdependent world.”
On Nov 6, former US president Trump became the first president in more than a century to win a non-consecutive second term in a stunning political comeback.
He is set to be elected as US president, becoming the first Republican to secure the popular vote since George W. Bush in 2004.
