Second mooncake recall in a week after Malaysian snow skin yam product pulled due to E coli


SINGAPORE: The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has ordered the recall of Baker’s Cottage’s snow skin signature yam mooncake due to the presence of E coli.

The product is imported from a bakery chain in Malaysia. 

In a media release on Friday (Sep 13), SFA said it detected E coli at levels “exceeding the maximum limits stipulated in Singapore’s Food Regulations” during a regulatory sampling of mooncakes. 

E coli is a bacteria normally found in the intestines of people and animals, and may be introduced when cross-contamination occurs during the production process. While most species of the bacteria are harmless, some types may cause diarrhoea, stomach pain, cramps and fever.

The affected mooncakes have an expiry date of Dec 31, 2024.

Baker’s Cottage has about 160 outlets across Malaysia. SFA has directed the importer of the affected mooncakes, Ewayz, to recall the products, and the recall is ongoing.

Consumers who have purchased the mooncakes should not consume them and can contact their point of purchase for enquiries, said SFA.

Those who have consumed the mooncakes and are concerned about their health should seek medical advice, the agency added.

The recall comes a day after SFA similarly recalled all batches of Four Seasons Durians’ mini D24 durian mooncakes, after detecting high levels of a bacterium linked to food poisoning.
