SingPost trials mail collection utilising MRT trains

SINGAPORE: Singapore Post (SingPost) started on Tuesday (Jun 25) a three-month trial utilising MRT trains to collect postal items from service points near train stations.

It will see SingPost employees collect postal items from Tampines and Raffles Place MRT stations, and deliver them to the sorting facility near Paya Lebar MRT station.

Up to two employees will make the collection each day, riding in MRT cabins on the East-West Line between the off-peak hours of 11am and 2pm, said SingPost and SMRT’s business arm, Stellar Lifestyle, in a news release on Monday.

The trial is part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two companies and aims to study the operational cost efficiencies and carbon emission savings in utilising MRT trains to collect postal items.

“Commuters can look forward to greater convenience with postal services integrated within train stations, providing a seamless experience and eliminating the need to go out of the way to post offices or courier collection points,” the two companies said in the release.

“Businesses located around the rail network can also tap on a convenient and readily available drop-off point for delivery services to meet growing demands in the e-commerce space.”

The pilot comes three months after SingPost opened a standalone counter of its parcel drop-offs and returns service POPStop at Tampines MRT station.

If successful, SingPost plans to expand the trial to more stations across SMRT-operated lines and determine where more POPStops and service points can be located to bring more convenience to communities.
