Traffic builds up on major highways

KUALA LUMPUR: Traffic is building up along several major highways as people head back to their hometowns for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

Checks on highways heading to the east coast, north, and south this morning found traffic at a crawl, with many cars on the road.

In a post on X, the East Coast Expressway (LPT) said traffic was heavy on several parts of the highway. This included the stretch heading towards the Gombak Toll Plaza, from Genting Sempah to Bentong, and from KM13.3 to KM237.2 between Gambang and Jabur.

PLUS Malaysia Bhd (PLUS) also reported heavy traffic on routes heading north and south. This was especially evident on the stretch from Tapah to Gopeng and on the North-South Expressway Central Link (ELITE) from Bandar Serenia to the Nilai interchange.

Additionally, PLUS reported several accidents causing congestion at KM150.6 northbound from Bukit Tambun (U) to Juru and KM296.2 from Gopeng to Simpang Pulai.

Accidents were also reported southbound at KM293.6 from Southville City to Putra Mahkota, KM458.8 from Sungai Buloh to Bukit Lanjan, KM285.0 from Putra Mahkota to Bandar Baru Nilai, and KM114.1 from Sungai Petani (S) to Bertam.

PLUS said it has activated “Smartlanes” at several locations experiencing heavy traffic.

Previously, the Malaysian Highway Authority (LLM) said it was anticipating a surge in traffic to 2.77 million vehicles per day on major expressways during the festivities.

It estimated that 2.1 million vehicles would use expressways under PLUS Group, followed by 216,000 on the KL-Karak Expressway (KLK), 176,000 on the West Coast Expressway (WCE), 156,000 on the East Coast Expressway 1 (LPT1), and 70,000 on LPT2.
