A Singaporean TikToker is in hot water after talking about his less-than-pleasant experience at a card convention.
On April 12, content creator Daryll (@darylljaypt) posted a video of himself outside Singapore Expo, claiming he regretted attending the event because “everyone was so smelly”.
Daryll likened it to “fermented” sweat in “fat folds”, before making gagging sounds.
Based on the clip, Daryll appeared to have attended the SG Collectibles & Card Show, which took place at Singapore Expo from April 11 to 12, an event that typically draws large crowds of trading card enthusiasts.
Daryll’s TikTok was posted onto the Singapore Raw subreddit thread, where more than 100 comments, mostly negative, with many netizens calling it unnecessary and offensive.
“Yes it’s smelly, but no need to make a video about it,” read one comment.
Others pointed out that while he might have had a point, the delivery was questionable, with one even writing if posting the video was a wise decision.
“He could have said it in a much better manner,” one netizen wrote, while others felt his remarks unfairly targeted larger individuals.
However, there were those who agreed with Daryll, with many in his TikTok comments section almost unanimously agreeing with him.
“I actually thought it was just me,” admitted one, while another added that attendees are likely aware of such issues.
Now, if you think Daryll would have backed down, he decided to keep the issue in the spotlight and fully embrace the hype and has added “hygiene ambassador” to his TikTok profile name.
He has also posted a few follow-up videos, including one captioned: “I am sorry that you are smelly.” Addressing the backlash, he clarified his comments were never meant to criticise the trading card hobby itself.
“I was there also. Don’t try to gaslight everyone and make it seem like I’m bashing your hobby. “What I’m bashing is the sour smell that many people seem to have,” he said.
Daryll then suggested that people either change their soap or shower more often.
On April 15, he posted another video asking: ‘Why are smelly people sensitive when they can change it?” Riding on a Sabrina Carpenter ‘House Tour’ trend online, he also wandered around a supermarket showing off various detergents, soaps and deodorants on sale.
