SINGAPORE – Two men are slated to be charged in court on March 20 over the sale of a fake iPhone.
The duo, aged 40 and 34, were arrested on March 19 with 22 fake mobile phones, charging cables, and cash totalling over $1,000 seized, the police said in a release on the same day.
The arrests came after the 40-year-old man approached a woman at City Plaza on March 12 and allegedly sold her a fake Apple iPhone 16 Pro Max for $600. This model costs at least $1,899, according to the local Apple website.
After the transaction, the woman could not log into her Apple ID account, and brought it to an authorised retailer, the police said.
There, she learned that the mobile phone was a counterfeit.
Both men are due to be charged with cheating. Those convicted may be jailed up to 10 years and fined.
Be cautious if you are approached by strangers offering to sell luxury items, especially at highly discounted prices, the police said.
