SINGAPORE – A pedestrian seen crossing the road while the traffic light was green for vehicles was taken to hospital after she was hit by a car in Clementi on the morning of Aug 29.
The police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force said, in response to media queries, that they were alerted to the accident at the junction of Clementi Avenue 2 and Commonwealth Avenue West at about 8.45am that day.
The 50-year-old pedestrian was taken conscious to the National University Hospital. The driver of the car, a 51-year-old man, is assisting with police investigations.
In a video posted on the Roads.sg Facebook page, an individual wearing a light-coloured top and dark pants and holding an umbrella can be seen running across the first half of a major cross-junction along Clementi Avenue 2.
The traffic light for vehicles going straight along Commonwealth Avenue West towards Clementi at this point is green. The light for vehicles turning right is red.
The individual is seen stopping at a road island under the East-West Line MRT track before crossing the next half of the junction.
Vehicles on the two rightmost lanes – towards Buona Vista – are stationary, but vehicles in the other lanes are in motion.
As the pedestrian runs across the second half of the junction, she is hit by a dark-coloured car, and is sent flying for a few metres.
Just a day earlier, the Traffic Police said in its mid-year road traffic statistics that the number of accidents and casualties in the first half of 2026 continued to show an upward trend over the past three years.
The number of traffic accidents resulting in injuries increased from 3,748 in the first half of 2025 to 3,869 for the same period in 2026.
Injuries rose from 4,894 in the first half of 2025 to 5,090 during the same period in 2026.
But the number of fatalities fell from 79 in the first half of 2025 to 61 in the first half of 2026, and the number of fatal accidents dropped from 78 to 60.
An area of concern was that accidents involving elderly pedestrians increased from 121 in the first six months of 2025 to 144 cases for the same period in 2026.
The number of injured elderly pedestrians went up from 106 to 132 in the same period.
Of the reported cases in 2026, 38.9 per cent involved elderly pedestrians who engaged in unsafe behaviour, such as jaywalking and crossing outside designated pedestrian crossings.
